Satana Deberry is Executive Director of the North Carolina Housing Coalition and Sr. Vice President of Policy and Programs for the NC Community Development Initiative. She is a native of Hamlet, North Carolina, and is a graduate of Princeton (B.A.) and Duke Universities (J.D. and M.B.A.). She writes, speaks, and thinks about housing and community economic development. Sometimes she even dreams about how we can create healthy, sustainable communities where everyone has the opportunity for success.
In her work, she brings nearly two decades of experience in policy, regulatory, governmental, administrative, human resource and contractual/legal matters. She’s worked for the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Washington, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and Durham’s Self Help Credit Union. She has a long history of working with Habitats, beginning as a volunteer in high school and college and later serving on the board of Durham Habitat. During 2011-12, she served as Interim Executive Director of Durham Habitat and still finds it to be one of the most transformative experiences of her professional career.
